More than 200 Men & Women gathered together to celebrate the second annual 100 Men & Women “Making A Difference in Tampa Bay” on Thursday night January 10th at the Italian Club in Ybor City. Foundation board member Coach Lou Maggio put it very well stating “100 Men and Women is targeting people who have succeeded, done well in life. They have earned it…all of it. Life is not about getting a trophy…life is about earning it…not about wins and losses. Life is about earning it and paying it forward. That is what the Mulry foundation strives to do each day….Pay it forward.” Maggio continued by stating that the game of baseball has not changed that much over the years. Yet the people have changed….life, passing along values…growing up we learned values and these values are not making it down to our young people.” Maggio is inspired by Coach Mulry and other leaders who “pay it forward with their gifts, through sports, our talents…this is what we are trying to do.”
The genesis of this fine evening started when one of Coach Mulry’s friends in Texas shared with him an awareness program to bring people together for one evening to show the community impact through “100 Men and Women.” Mulry loved the idea and wondered “why can’t we do this in Tampa Bay? We can!” In January 2018, the first 100 Men & Women evening held at the Tampa Catholic High School Fellowship Hall, brought so many coaches, former players, and friends of Coach Mulry and other leaders to share stories and to raise funds that evening to support the Foundation’s efforts. Attendees were asked that evening to donate $100 or more, just once for that calendar year. The success of that one night grew to locate a new venue for year two. So for three hours on this Thursday evening in Ybor City, in year two of 100 Men & Women, the Foundation showed videos of children participating in the baseball and softball clinic. Attendees heard a few testimonials from young men who had participated in the Foundation Day clinic in prior years and who shared with the audience how these young men have used the life skills they learned from the Mulry Foundation, in their lives. Coach Mulry added “We had so much interest in 100 Men and Women. More people today are aware of the mission of our foundation, to reach young kids through life skills. It is like a toolbox of life skills that we are teaching here. We are helping young people through their journey into life. We shared with the audience that evening what we achieve on Foundation Day, partnership with Aces Nation, Mentoring/Literacy Program, Parents Program …..it is a “grand slam” and we will just polish it as we go along each year.
Board member and Coach Dan Martucci commented “It is a great venue (The Italian Club). I loved the ‘feel’ of the club. The bar area provided a great place to hang out and spark up conversations. For next year, I would include better audio/visual and a rehearsed speech.”
Peter J. Mulry Foundation Secretary and Board Member Jeanette LaRussa Fenton noted on the evening “It is a great opportunity to get to know both long time volunteers and people new to the Foundation. Relationship building is key to promoting the Peter J. Mulry Foundation and growing its support base. I think we need to provide a very direct way to generate donations/support by distributing pledge cards/donation envelopes and also having someone standing by with a phone or computer able to take credit card donations.”
From the food, to the beverages, to the speakers and comradery, this special evening will likely just get better each year as Coach Mulry continues to “polish” the roster and lineup. Mark your calendar for the next 100 Men & Women evening set for Thursday, January 9, 2020 at the Italian Club in Ybor City at 6pm.
