May 14, 2019
May 14, 2019, will be recognized as one of the most memorable days in the history of the Mulry foundation. It marked the beginning of our reading literacy and mentoring program through the foundation's 100 Men & Women Making A Difference. With the help of Now SC Press, publisher of the “Threads and Friends” book series, Ballast Point Elementary school & principal Beth Hoover, Chris Nardi of BB&T and co-sponsor of the literacy program and the foundation's Board of Directors, the day was an exceptional success
Mulry Foundation board member Joe Caro explains “The reading program at Ballast will act as a prototype that will spread to other schools in our community. The importance of reading can never be understated. The mentor program will do nothing but show the young participants that others in our community care for them. The life skills being taught will become part of their lives.”
A while in the making, this program from the very beginning was designed to be a grassroots effort to improve overall reading skills of local area elementary & middle school children, as well as help, develop the necessary & priceless life-skills that sports teach and hopefully be at the core of their future lives. At the same time, the series embraces the teaching and development of life skills through the books sports characters. This is where the mentorship portion of the program kicks in. Through adult readings & encouraging communication & open discussions, our hope is to reach these children in an impactful enough way that they will continue share the messages of love, service, responsibility, and accountability the books bring for generations to come.
This philosophy stands at the very core of the Mulry foundation and over time will be a major contributor in spreading the word of our Mission. “The reading program is paramount to the basics of the foundation, life skills…… reading is one of the most important life skills there is. Not only the literacy of reading but the impact of the mentor with the child(ren). When a child sees that someone cares, they will have a much higher percentage of success in their own life” describes board member Dan Martucci.
Thank you for everyone who had made this possible. We are just so excited about what the future will bring for this program and the children of Tampa Bay!
